Film Preview: State of Play Preview and Director Q&A, 20 April, Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh

One of my favourite TV series of the last few years was State of Play, a dark political thriller from the BBC starring John Simm and David Morrissey that was a breath of fresh air for British drama.

Now the series has been adapted for the big screen and sees Russell Crowe take on Simm’s role of journalist Cal McAffrey and Ben Affleck that of troubled politician Stephen Collins, played by Morrissey in the original.

While I fear the layered, intelligent plot could be sacrificed in the transition, director Kevin (The Last King of Scotland) Macdonald should be a safe pair of hands while scriptwriter Tony Gilroy did well with the Bourne films.

Kevin Macdonald will be appearing via satellite for a Q&A after the film’s preview screening at the Cameo on Monday 20 April. Here’s a look at the trailer, followed by a glimpse at the original:
