Two more great films will be screened this Sunday, 11 January, at Edinburgh’s Cameo Cinema as part of their regular Sunday Matinee Double Bill – the exquisite Whisky Galore! (1949) and the superb The Sweet Smell of Success (1957). The films are linked by their director, Alexander Mackendrick.
Whisky Galore! takes place on the island of Todday, off the West Coast of Scotland, during the Second World War. One night a passing ship, the SS Cabinet Minister, is sunk, its cargo, comprised of thousands of bottles of whisky, soon the cause of much excitement around the island.
The Sweet Smell of Success is set in New York in the 50s and stars Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis in a tale of gossip columnists and what drives them…
