Made in 1958 but not released until 1960, this documentary was filmed at the Newport Jazz Festival at Rhode Island and according to Wikipedia it “mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America’s Cup yacht races. The film is largely without dialog or narration (except for periodic announcements by emcee Willis Conover).”
Groups playing on the day included Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Anita O’Day.
The GFT showing includes an introduction by writer and jazz specialist Brian Morton.
